These poems were written for my children.

For Lisa
Lisa, lost to my world,
you lingered in your imperfect body
as your head grew
like a ball of wax
left too long in the sun.
I loved you.

Lisa, fed through tubes,
your innocent suffering
prolonged by
the cruel grace of science,
for three graceless months.
I loved you.

Lisa, buried in the wind,
know that I loved you
and a part of me was burned
and scattered with your remains.

For David

1.
Love stands alone
on the far shore
and a dark tide
rises with
a jealous moon.
Rises between
my love and me.
The black mud
oozes between
impatient toes
I'll learn to swim --
walk on water.

2.
I am a little toy fireman
my son calls Daddy.

For Brian

Your days are wide with innocence
and the hard light of morning
fails to seal your dreams
in shadows.

Your dreaming is a toy.
A crystal held to the light,
it refracts all the mysteries
of life and bends them
toward your desires.

Now you are a child,
and that time will not last.
But if you can,
hold fast to your daytime dreaming.
Without that magic
the world is much darker
than you can imagine.

For Kevin

1.
Drop a pebble
in the water.
Rings outward.
Rock floating down.
Out of sight.
Still floating down
into darker water.
Watch!
I'll catch it.

2.
Let the baloon go.
Upward.
Higher.
Dissolve in light.
Invisible.
Watch!
See it burst
in my heart.
